Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Welcome to the new season of the podcast, now titled "Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation"!
Join your host, Pastor Robert Young, as we embark on a journey of spiritual exploration and renewal. This podcast is designed to help you deepen your faith and find inner peace through calming, reflective, and transformative meditative practices inspired by scripture.
Our Evolution
While the podcast, formerly known as Not Your Parent's Religion, focused in Seasons 1 and 2 on correcting misinformation and myths about religious beliefs and the teaching of Jesus Christ, the program has evolved. In Season 3, we began drawing closer to God with guided meditations, exploring all the details of why and how to meditate, and discussing the Biblical origins of Christian meditations.
With over 30 years of experience in Church planting and mentoring other Pastors, and 30+ years of training leaders in evangelism/discipleship, Pastor Young is here to guide you through these moments of stillness and connection with God.
What to Expect in Season 4
We are excited to return with Season 4 starting Sunday, October 5. We will continue to offer a structured weekly schedule:
- Sundays: Our weekly guided meditation episode.
- Monday through Friday: Daily devotions and reflections that expand on the topic of the Sunday meditations.
- Wednesdays: Audio episodes of our House Church series. This series reflects the Bible's teaching that believers should gather together for corporate worship, fellowship, encouragement, and even admonishment.
For those seeking an enhanced experience, we are adding video versions of the meditations and devotions to our Patreon page. These videos are designed to give you a more immersive experience as you meditate on the Father, His teachings, and His presence.
Tune in each week as we lead you on this path to connecting more deeply with God.
Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Pursuing God Through Solitude: Meditation from Mark 1:35
Before the world wakes, there’s a quiet place where strength returns. We step into that space with Mark 1:35, watching Jesus rise while it’s still dark to pray, and we learn how solitude can move us from hurry to holy. Guided by Scripture, breathwork, and gentle body awareness, we build a simple practice that turns down the volume of worry and turns up attentive trust.
We start with honest confession from Psalm 51, not to shame ourselves but to make room for mercy. From there, a steady breathing pattern and light muscle relaxation calm the nervous system and invite focus. With Psalms 100 and 8, praise reframes our outlook so God’s majesty, not our to-do list, sets the agenda. In that posture, we sit with Jesus’ example: solitude is not escape, it’s intentional presence with the Father. Each inhale gathers a specific distraction; each exhale releases it into God’s capable hands. Silence becomes a mirror that shows where the heart is dry and a well where the Spirit restores what is spent.
As trust settles deeper than striving, joy reappears. “In your presence is fullness of joy” becomes more than a verse; it becomes felt reality that steadies our return to daily life. We don’t withdraw to avoid people; we withdraw to love them better. The practice is practical and repeatable: confess, breathe, relax, worship, listen, surrender, and receive. If you’re carrying decision fatigue, constant notifications, or low-grade anxiety, this rhythm will help you create sacred margins that renew clarity and compassion.
If this guided time helped you reset, subscribe for more Christ-centered meditations, share the episode with a friend who needs a quiet morning, and leave a review so others can find this space of rest and renewal.

Welcome to this week's Guided Christian Meditation. I am Pastor Robert Young, and thank you for allowing me to be your guide on this journey. If you're new to Guided Christian Meditation, check out Episode 164, entitled, Getting Started in Guided Christian Meditation. Episode 164 explains the why and even the science of all of the stages of meditation that we practice.
Pastor Robert Young:This week's subject is about pursuing God through Solitude. Our scripture is from Mark chapter one verse thirty five.
Pastor Robert Young:But first, according to Scriptures, God requires us to be completely involved and free from wrongful acts in mind, body, and spirit. True confession prepares the heart for being in the presence of Almighty God. Let's repeat the prayer that King David prayed in Psalms chapter 51, verses one through four, where it says, Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin is ever before me.
Pastor Robert Young:Before we start to reflect on Mark chapter 1, verse 35, let's prepare our mind by closing our eyes and taking a deep breath as we invite the presence of God to fill us. Now, take a deep breath in for a count of seven, hold the breath for a count of five. Now slowly exhale for a count of seven. Let's repeat. Take a deep breath in for a count of seven, hold the breath for a count of five, and then slowly exhale for a count of seven.
Pastor Robert Young:Now let's prepare our body with muscle relaxation exercises. We will simply tense each muscle group for three seconds and then release the muscle. Remember, don't hold your breath for this portion of the meditation. Let's begin with the calf muscles. Lightly tense the calves for a count of three. Now release. Moving upward to the hamstrings, quads, and glutes. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Moving to the abdominals, chest, and back area. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Finally, moving to the arms and the shoulders. Let's lightly tense these muscle groups for three seconds. Now release.
Pastor Robert Young:Now we can enter into worship of our Heavenly Father by focusing on Psalms chapter 100, verses 1 through 3, where it tells us to shout for joy to the Lord all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness, come before Him with joyful songs. Take a moment to lift up your voice in praise and thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father, who is worthy of all honor and glory, by repeating Psalms chapter 8, verse 9, which says, Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.
Pastor Robert Young:Now that we have prepared our mind, our body, and our spirit, let's begin to examine Mark chapter one, verse thirty-five. Hear the words from the Gospel of Mark. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place where he prayed.
Pastor Robert Young:Today, we focus on the gift of solitude. Remember the example of Jesus, who often withdrew from the crowds, from the demands, the noise, the neediness to find a solitary place to pray. This was how Jesus recharged, prioritized, and connected with the Father. Solitude is not loneliness, it is intentional presence.
Pastor Robert Young:Imagine yourself joining Jesus in that quiet, solitary place. The world is asleep. The demands are silent. It is just you and the Father. Let go of any guilt about stepping away from the world. This withdrawal is a radical act of spiritual prioritization. You are doing the essential thing.
Pastor Robert Young:Think about the things that crowd your mind. The list, the notifications, the unresolved worries. As you breathe in, collect one of those distractions. As you breathe out, release it, placing it into the capable hands of Almighty God. Inhale, collect the noise. Exhale. Release the noise. You are inviting the Holy Spirit to transform the crowded marketplace of your heart into a quiet sanctuary. God is here to restore your soul. Allow the silence to act as a spiritual mirror, gently revealing any place where your heart feels dry or depleted. Repeat this silent prayer to yourself. Lord, search my heart and refresh my soul. Take a moment to feel the stability that comes from relying on God. Your strength is not found in your striving, but in quietness and trust of Almighty God. Let that trust settle deep your bones. Feel the peace of his presence filling you up, preparing you for re-entry into the world. You are not isolated. You are being replenished so that you can better serve and love those around you.
Pastor Robert Young:Repeat the following affirmation now and for the next 7 days:
Pastor Robert Young:In the presence of God is fullness of joy, and at His right hand are pleasures forevermore. Again, In the presence of the Lord is fullness of joy, and at his right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Pastor Robert Young:Our Assignment: Listen to this meditation daily until it saturates your soul. Follow up every day with the daily devotionals and watch what God does in your heart. Amen.
